In MISTAKEN IDENTITY ho cercato di fare in modo che ci fosse qualcosa per chi ama la musica dance e high energy, qualcosa per i fan del pop/rock, qualcosa per chi ascolta l'R&B - un po' di tutto per tutti. Credo che questo album mi rappresenti bene, perchè mi è sempre piaciuto esplorare stili musicali differenti. Non voglio mostrare un solo volto, ed è questo ciò che avevo bisogno di dire in musica (Donna Summer, 1991).

Donna & Keith Diamond

Con il suo sesto senso per i grandi produttori, la scelta di Keith Diamond come produttore/arrangiatore per MISTAKEN IDENTITY da parte di Donna è stata una mossa ispirata. Come il suo lavoro con Billy Ocean, Mick Jagger e Michael Bolton ha dimostrato, Diamond è uno di quei rari produttori il cui talento compositivo, di arrangiatore ed esecutore è tanto grande quanto la capacità di dare la giusta direzione ad un album (Original press release, 1991).

Esperienza incredibile

Anche se MISTAKEN IDENTITY non fu un successo commerciale, il disco rimane un'incredibile esperienza d'ascolto perchè Donna Summer si trova al massimo della forma vocale, e il materiale le permette di mostrare la versatilità d'interprete che la contraddistingue in maniera accattivante. La voce potente di Donna risplende su ogni pezzo, passando dal soul/R&B alla house music, ballate, nu-disco ed echi di Prince (BODY TALK), Michael Jackson (la title track) e Soul II Soul. Tra i brani migliori si segnalano: GET ETHNIC, WHEN LOVE CRIES, HEAVEN'S JUST A WHISPER AWAY, CRY OF A WAKING HEART, FRIENDS UNKNOWN e LET THERE BE PEACE. Gioiellini funky/dance come FRED ASTAIRE e SAY A LITTLE PRAYER avrebbero dovuto essere remixati e pubblicati come singoli.

Dopo anni di assenza dal mercato, MISTAKEN IDENTITY è finalmente disponibile su iTunes. La remastered & expanded edition su CD, contenente bonus tracks, è stata pubblicata il primo Dicembre 2014. Le bonus tracks sono: WHEN LOVE CRIES (Single Version Remix), WHEN LOVE CRIES (Vocal Club Dub), WORK THAT MAGIC (ISA Extended Remix). Stranamente, quest'ultima versione dell'album - disponibile anche su LP e iTunes - non contiene la versione originale di WORK THAT MAGIC. Il raro Capricorn Isa Remix di WORK THAT MAGIC (4:29) è reperibile nell'ottima compilation HITS, SINGLES & MORE (Crimson/Driven By The Music, 2015).
